The STAR Method for Interview Answers
A four-part structure turns a vague claim into evidence of what you did.
The useful idea
- Situation and task
Briefly describe the specific situation and the task, goal, or challenge you were responsible for.
- Action
Explain the action you personally took, including the skills, choices, and resources you used.
- Result
Finish with the result, your contribution, and a concrete improvement or lesson when possible.
Why this matters
Specific behavior and outcomes are more credible and memorable than saying you are simply ‘good at’ a skill.
Try this
Prepare one Situation → Task → Action → Result example with a measurable outcome.
Test your recall
Which STAR section explains what you personally did?
- Situation
- Action — correct
- Result
The Action section focuses on your own steps and choices.
