Why Airplane Cabins Are Pressurized
The air at cruising altitude has too little pressure for normal breathing.
The useful idea
- Pressure falls
As altitude increases, atmospheric pressure drops even though oxygen remains about the same percentage of the air.
- Transfer gets harder
Lower oxygen pressure makes it harder for the lungs to move enough oxygen into the bloodstream.
- Cabin equivalent
A pressurization system keeps the cabin near a much lower equivalent altitude than the aircraft’s cruising altitude.
Why this matters
Pressurization lets passengers and crew function safely without breathing the outside air at cruising pressure.
